How we track the data

LostToAI organizes official workforce-reduction notices and public records by state, city, and job category, so you can see where job cuts are showing up. We use only free, public sources, and we are careful with language: we report what a record says, and we never claim a job loss was caused by AI unless the record itself says so.

What does LostToAI track?
Official notices that employers are required to file before larger layoffs and closures (state WARN notices), company disclosures in regulatory filings, and official company announcements — plus broader labor-market signals we monitor separately.
What counts as “verified”?
A workforce reduction is verified when it comes from an official notice or public record with a clear employer, location, and number of workers affected. Only verified reductions are included in the headline totals.
What does not count as verified?
Broader monitored signals — patterns in job categories that are more exposed to automation — are shown separately and are never added into verified totals. They indicate where to watch, not a confirmed job loss.
Does LostToAI claim AI caused these layoffs?
No. Most official notices do not state a cause. We label a reduction as AI- or automation-related only when the official record uses that language. Everything else is simply a verified workforce reduction.
Why do the numbers change?
Public agencies add, update, and correct notices over time, and notices can arrive weeks after a decision. Figures reflect what official sources report at the time we check, and may be revised.
Why do some states have more data?
Coverage depends on what each state publishes and how. We add states as their official notices become available in a reliable form. States we don’t yet cover are marked as monitored, not empty.
How are duplicate notices handled?
The same event is often reported more than once (an amended notice, or a filing plus a notice). We match those to a single record and show the most authoritative figure — we never add duplicates together.
How do I report an error?
Email corrections@losttoai.com with the employer, location, and date. We review against the underlying official record and update or remove as appropriate.

Two figures we always keep separate

Verified workers affected counts only reductions backed by an official notice or public record. Monitored signals is a separate watch-list of automation-exposed job categories. We never blend the two.
